BC ELN Staff Statement on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
Last updated November 18, 2025
British Columbia Electronic Library Network (BC ELN) staff commit to and are responsible for creating a workplace culture that is safe, equitable, inclusive, and diverse. We make this commitment so that we can honour and value the inherent dignity and intersectionality of all persons, regardless of, but not limited to, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, labour group membership, individual beliefs, age, ability, and language.
BC ELN staff commit to:
- understanding how BC ELN was shaped and influenced by oppressive, colonial structures and practices, and working to address historical and ongoing systemic discrimination and injustices in our workplace
- engaging in decolonization work and partnerships with Indigenous led organizations and institutions
- embracing principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in daily work
- engaging in ongoing learning on topics such as accessibility, decolonization, anti-racism, and social justice as they relate to libraries and the post-secondary sector
- practicing inclusive recruitment, hiring, accommodation, and retention strategies for all BC ELN employees and contractors, including student employees and prospective hires
- creating welcoming physical and virtual spaces that reflect JEDI principles
- being an ally by raising awareness of and promoting JEDI principles and initiatives among our membership
